Band biography

After establishing of Doina Klezmer, klezmer has reached growing audiences in Finland and Europe. The group has performed in Sweden, Russia and in the most important festivals in Finland with own concerts, beside the gigs in clubs and various happy occasions.

Doina Klezmer has also succesfully collaborated with other artists like Tommi Kitti, the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) Radio Theater and Zagros Ensemble.

The repertoire of Doina Klezmer consists of traditional klezmer arranged by the members and contemporary klezmer works composed mostly by Sampo Lassila.

Year 2004 Doina Klezmer's Nomada album was one of eleven candidates for Teosto (Finnish Composers' Copyright Society) Award.

Sampo Lassila

Sampo Lassila is one of the top bass players in Finland. His regular work includes performing as a musician and composer in a large variety of groups and styles from etno to chamber music.

Doina Klezmer, Kaski, Nada, Frio, Free Okapi, Zagros, Avanti and Sinfonia Lahti are among the recently most active groups and orchestras.

Markku Lepistö

Markku Lepistö is one of the best folk accordionists in Finland. His skills on both chromatic and diatonic accordions are recognized worldwide.

At the moment Markku is mostly involved with Värttinä and Doina Klezmer bands as well as with his solo project. You can also hear Markku on stage in duo with Petri Hakala or Pekka Lehti.

Hannu Vasara

Violin and viola virtuoso Hannu Vasara is the leader of the 2nd violin of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In addition Hannu is a long-term member of the Avanti chamber orchestra, Zagros- and Cuarteto NuevAmerica ensembles.

During the years 1991-1993 Hannu complemented his studies in Israel with Chaim Taub after which he took a Diploma of violin in Sibelius Academy.

Tapani Jämsen

Percussionist Tapani Jämsen is an experienced rhythm musician. After being a drummer in various Finnish groups he also worked in theatres.

Nowadays Tapani is mainly concentrated in Doina developing his sound with handmade Finnish Kumu-drums.

Soundmen

Doina Klezmer has the privilege to cooperate with excellent soundmen. Janne Viksten, Pekka Purhonen and Jari Holmberg have worked with the band in live sound sessions.
